First Friday at the Farm (5–8)

May 4, 2012
The Farm stays open late just once a month for this special event. In May the Farm will be featuring local Whidbey Island wines. We are focusing on local Whidbey Island wines for two reasons: because the diversity of local wines has expanded so greatly in the last few years, and also because of our desire to remind the community that it’s important to shop local.

First Fridays are a great time for locals and visitors to access the Farm after hours in a more relaxed, and intimate manner. Com sample quality local wines, dine at the Whidbey Pies Cafe, and take in the beautiful art in the Farm’s three art galleries. The cost of attending First Friday is $10 and includes five tastings. For more information on the First Fridays, contact our Wine Shop at 360.678.7700. Reservations for dinner are recommended: 360.678.1288.

Dinner

Dinner at the Cafe will begin with a choice of Mexican fish chowder or vegetarian soup followed by pork carnitas on house made corn tortillas with cumin cilantro slaw, roasted chilies, fresh salsa, sour cream and seasoned black beans. Vegetarian option will include grilled seasoned tofu. Dinner will be accompanied by Buell Neidlinger on Cello. Reservations for dinner are recommended: 360.678.1288.

Galleries

Robert Adamson "Handblown Glass Eggs"

In May The Rob Schouten Gallery celebrates its 4th Anniversary with a special invitational group show featuring nineteen artists inspired by  “Birds and Nests – The Art of Spring.”

The exhibition contains a rich selection of fine art, including bronze and natural fiber nests, welded steel sculpture, handblown glass, encaustics, jewelry, woven silk, paintings and prints interpreting our theme.

A special feature of this show is a collaboration between four gallery artists who have created a four-foot diameter nest made of branches and other natural materials that cradles three large hand blown glass eggs.

John Ursillo

John Ursillo, who works in colored pencil and water-soluble oil, will be the featured artist at Artworks Gallery for May. A consistent award-winning artist and popular instructor he takes the rapidly-rising professional medium of colored pencil to levels that have garnered him local and national attention.  John is a Signature Member in the Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA), making him the only artist so honored on Whidbey Island. Fewer than 5% of the Society’s 2000 members have this honor. In August of 2012 he will be one of two artists invited to present workshop on unique colored pencil techniques at the CPSA National Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Mary Jo Oxrieder "Roaring Twin Falls"

Raven Rocks Gallery presents “Blossoms of the Heart” with new works by Mary Jo Oxrieder. Mary Jo Oxrieder is unveiling her much anticipated latest series of fantasy paintings. From her heart, to the pen, to the paper and watercolors, seemingly impossible fantasy homes emerge. Sprouting in beautiful landscapes, hanging off cliffs and nestled by lakes and seashores, the details of these creations transport your heart to places it knew in childhood, and longs for again. Mary Jo will also be offering her latest objects d’art, such as her much loved Scrumble dolls, Lucky Fish and Minnows, Treasure Bowls, hand painted greeting cards and a variety of mixed media pieces.

May will also bring a sneak preview of our newest gallery artist, Primo D. Smith. Currently residing in metropolitan Los Angels, he has strong family ties on Whidbey Island. His one of a kind jewelry creations in Delica seed beads and personally hand cut gemstones are stunning statements of his artistry. A limited collection of his work will be available during May, and he will soon be a featured artist in our gallery.
